Manathakali Vathakulambhu/Makoi gravy/Wonderberry | Gayathiri's Cookbook

Manathakkali/Makoi/ wonderberry/Blacknight shade has lot of medicinal properties. It is rich in antioxidants, iron, vitamins and minerals. Manathakali Vathakulambhu is a traditional Tamil brahmin recipe. It is made with Manathkkali, tamarind and spices.

Ingredients:
Tamarind juice- 2.5 cups
Sesame oil- 2 tsp
Mustard seeds- 1/2 tsp
Fenugreek seeds- 1 tsp
Red chillies- 1 or 2
Manathakalai seeds-1/4 cup
Pearl onion- 6 or bIg onion- 1
Turmeric powder- 1/2 tsp
Salt- As needed
Hing- A pinch
Sambar powder- 2.5 tsp

Ingredients:
1.Heat 3 tsp sesame oil in a vessel. Add mustard seeds.
2. When mustard seeds starts to crackle, add fenugreek seeds and red chillies.
3. When the fenugreek seeds turns little brown, add 1/4 cup manathkkali seeds and fry for a minute.
4. add onion(optional) and saute until translucent.
5.Then add tamarind juice, turmeric powder, salt, hing and sambar powder.Mix it well .
6.let it boil for at least 10-15 minutes or until the raw smell of the sambar powder goes away.
7. Switch off the heat when the gravy has become thick.

Vathakulambhu is ready!!
