3 must-try hawker stalls at Tiong Bahru Food Centre!

In this video, we re-visit Tiong Bahru Food Centre and bring to you 3 must-try hawker food stalls. These stalls have been in business for many decades - the longest-standing Loo's Hainanese Curry Rice with a rich 80 years of history among the 3! At the same time, HappyCat. pays tribute to Koh Kee Teo (1938 - 2022), the founder of Koh Brother Pig's Organ Soup, for his legacy.

Zhong Yu Yuan Wei Wanton Mee ()

Mr Lee has been offering Char Siew for more than 40 years. Literally translated, (Bu Jian Tian) refers to never sees the sky, referring to the meat of the pig's armpit. It is said to be the most delicious part - marbled and tender. This premium meat is very rare as a pig has only 2 armpits and only a small portion can be used.

As reflected in his stall name '', Mr Lee aims to bring his customers the original flavours. It takes him long hours to do that, and preparation begins in the wee hours at 3am. The meat is roasted in the traditional way using charcoal. As one can imagine, it can be unbearably hot in the hawker stall, with the roasting furnace at 300 degree celsius!

Why is Char Siew so tasty? This is because the lean meat is layered with fat, and giving it a tender and juicy bite. The charred edges of the caramelised Char Siew render some smokiness to the meat.

The soup broth is cooked with premium ingredients like pig bones, anchovies, dried sole fish and radish. It goes well with the plump dumplings and wanton.

Give yourself a treat today! Just a word of caution - be prepared to queue for the delectable dish. If you're aiming the legendary premium pork, be there early.

Loo's Hainanese Curry Rice ()

Established in 1946 at Tanjong Pagar (at current PSA), the Loo's dishes have stood the test of time over the last 80 years. Mr Loo Kia Chee, the 2nd generation owner, has taken over the business from his father since 1979. Adhering to the traditional recipe he inherited, he continues offering the all-time favourites that attract a perpetual long queue.

The curry is creamy, flavourful, and spicy level is mild. The must-try signatures are crispy pork chop, curry chicken, sambal prawn, braised pork belly and more! Known as one of the best curry rice in Singapore, the Hainanese staple may look messy, yet it's so delicious!

Koh Brother Pig's Organ Soup ()

Starting in 1955 as a push cart vendor, Koh Brother Pig Organ's Soup has been established for more than 6 decades. Now helmed by the 3rd generation, Mr Thomas Koh, the stall specialises in Teochew-style clear soup, made daily from pig bones, offal and preserved mustard vegetables. It has been awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand Singapore 2019.

Each bowl comes with a mixture of pork innards like liver, intestine, lean meat, tripe, meatballs, and mustard veggie.

A must-try dish on their menu is the signature glutinous rice with chestnuts and pork belly stuffed in pig intestine (). As it takes 8 hours to make them by hand, the quantity is limited. Be there early to try them out!
