Kollu rasam/Horsegram rasam/Horsegram soup | Gayathiri's Cookbook

Kollu (Horsegram) Rasam:

Kollu is rich in anti-oxidants and aids in weight loss as it is low in fat and high in protein. It has the ability to reduce cholesterol as well.

Kollu also has the ability to generate body heat and therefore keeps you warm on a cold winter day.

You can consume this as a soup or you can eat it as a rasam with rice.


Ingredients:

Kollu(horse gram)-1/3 cup
Garlic cloves- 3
Black pepper- 1/2 teaspoon
Jeera- 2 teaspoon
Tamarind juice- 2 cups
Turmeric powder- 1/4 teaspoon
Salt- 1 teaspoon
Hing- A pinch
Rasam powder- 1 teaspoon
Tomatoes- 2
Oil- 2 teaspoon
Mustard seeds-1/2 teaspoon
Coriander leaves- for garnishing


Directions:

1. Pressure cook horse gram dal for upto 5 whistles. Strain the cooked dal water and keep it aside.
2. Grind cooked dal, 3 garlic cloves, 1/2 tsp black pepper, and 1 tsp jeera into a paste.
3. Take 2 cups of tamarind juice in a saucepan.
4. Add tomatoes, turmeric powder, salt, jeera, ground paste, and rasam powder.
5. Bring them to a boil. When the the water is reduced to half the quantity, add the cooked dal water.
6. Keep it on low flame until froth forms on top.
7. Heat 2 tsp oil. Add mustard seeds. When it starts to splutte,r add hing and switch off the flame.
8. Add this tadka to the rasam. Garnish with coriander leaves.

Kollu Rasam is ready!!
