How to Make Homemade Soft Pretzels with Kids!

Hello friends and families of all ages. Kyler really, really wanted to make homemade pretzels so that is exactly what we have done here in this video. The results were extremely satisfying, reminding us both of a theme park snack or a pretzel you'd find at a baseball game. Once you get the hang of it, you'll want to try different seasonings and spices. How about cinnamon and sugar? Garlic and oregano? The everything bagel pretzel was a smash hit! And... think of all the dips! Queso fundido perhaps? Cream cheese or spicy mustard? Makes for a great Sunday football snack as well. Get creative!

Ok... Here's the gist of the recipe. We're looking at about 40-50 minutes total prep and cook time. Not bad. This will make anywhere between 8 and 12 pretzels.

Ingredients
1 1/2 cups warm water
1 packet of active dry yeast
1 tsp kosher salt
1 Tablespoon of brown sugar
1 Tablespoon of butter, melted
3 3/4 cups all purpose flour (plus more for work surface)
optional toppings: course sea salt, poppy seeds, dried garlic, oregano, cumin

Baking soda bath
1/2 cup baking soda
9 cups water

Using your mixing bowl, whisk the yeast into the warm water and allow it to sit for about one minute. Whisk in the salt, sugar, and butter.
Let's start using the mixer...
Now, slowly add 3 cups, 1 cup at a time to the the mixer. Add 3/4 cups more flour, and if it seems sticky, add 1/4 cup of flour at a time until the dough comes off the side of the bowls and doesn't stick. Should feel springy to the touch.

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead it for about 3-4 minutes. Cover it with a kitchen towel and let sit for about 10 minutes.

You can now start your baking soda water bath. bring that to a boil.

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Line two baking sheets with parchment.

Cut the dough in half, quarters and then 1/8's or into 1/3 cup sections. Roll each piece of dough into long rope length strips. Form a U-shape. Cross the end points twice then pull down and connect the the lower part of the dough. This is getting confusing, huh? The video may help.)

Individually drop each pretzel into the baking soda bath and count anywhere between 20 - 25 seconds, strain and place on baking sheet. When these are done, add your seasonings and bake in the oven for about 12-15 minutes.

That's it!

Be inspired, get creative and include the kids.
