Colorful Tang Yuan (彩色汤圆) | The Chinese Cuisine

It's almost Chinese New Year! Made with natural, homemade food coloring, these tang yuan with rich, nutty fillings are delicious!

INGREDIENTS (24 tang yuan):
- 1 cup glutinous rice flour
- 1/2 cup cooked all purpose flour (typo in video)
- 3 tbsp. homemade food coloring (video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KahbdETGYoQ) OR several drops food coloring (e.g. McCormick) + water
- 2 tbsp. walnuts
- 2 tbsp. pine nuts
- 1 tbsp. roasted black sesame seeds
- 1 tsp. sugar
- 2 tbsp. sesame paste WITH sugar mixed in

DIRECCTIONS:
1. divide uncooked glutinous rice flour into three sections, adding in food coloring and mixing until it forms a pliable dough similar to Play-Doh in texture
2. for the filling, roast nuts at 350 F until golden brown
3. chop nuts into fine pieces and add in roasted black sesame seeds
4. add in sugar. NOTE: if you want a softer, more flowing filling, add in more sugar so that the ratio of nuts to sugar is 1:1
5. add in sesame paste that already has sugar mixed in
6. mix well
7. add in cooked all purpose flour. ratio of flour to everything else should be 1:1
8. mix well until all the ingredients stick together
9. form the filling into 24 balls
10. assemble the tang yuan as shown in the video. you can combine 2 or even 3 colors
11. to cook, drop the tang yuan into boiling water
12. once the water comes to a boil again, add in a tbsp. of room temp. water and repeat one more time
13. the tang yuan are cooked when they are floating
14. serve and enjoy!
