Chow chow kootu/ Chayote kootu | Gayathiri's Cookbook

This Chow chow kootu is a delicious South Indian gravy which goes well with hot steamed rice and rasam.It is made with chow chow vegetable, toordal, coconut and spices.

Ingredients:
Toordal- 1/2 cup
Chow chow- 2
Turmeric powder- 1/2 tsp
Salt- As needed
Hing- A pinch
Coconut--1/2 cup
Jeera- 1 tsp
Red chillies- 5
Oil- 1 or 2 tsp
Mustard seeds- 1 tsp

Directions:
1. Take chow chow, turmeric powder, salt, hing and 1 cup water in a bowl.
2. Boil until the vegetables are soft.
3.Pressure cook 1/2 cup toordal for upto 4 whistles. Mash it well and keep it aside.
4. Grind 1 tsp of jeera , 4 red chillies and 1/2 cup coconut into a fine paste and keep it ready.
5.When the vegetables are cooked, add the ground paste. Let it boil for couple of minutes.
6. Then add the mashed toordal and boil it for another 2 minutes.
Temper it with mustard seeds, curry leaves and red chillies.
Switch off the heat.

Chow chow kootu is ready!!
