Black eyed peas masala/Karamani masala | Gayathiri's Cookbook

Black eyed peas are very healthy and adds protein and fibers to the dish.This is a very simple and quick dish which can be served with both roti and rice.

Ingredients:
Black eyed peas- 1 cup
Oil- 4 tbsp
Bay leaf- 1
Cinnamon stick- 1
Fennel seeds- 1 tsp
Onion-1
Green chillies- 2
Ginger garlic paste- 1 tsp
Tomatoes- 2
Turmeric powder- 1/2 tsp
Salt- 1 tsp
Sugar- 1 tsp
Cumin powder- 1 tsp
Coriander powder- 1 tsp
Garam masala powder- 1 tsp
Red chilli powder- 1 tsp
Coriander leaves- For garnishing


Directions:

1. Soak 1 cup black eyed peas(Vella karamani) overnight.Pressure cook the soaked peas for upto 4 whistles. Keep it aside.

2. Heat 2 tbsp oil. Add 1 bay leaf, 1 cinnamon stick and 1 tsp fennel seeds. Saute for a minute.

3. Add and saute onion (1 big) until translucent.Then add 2 green chillies, 1 tsp ginger garlic paste and saute for a minute.

4. Add 2 tomatoes and cook until soft. Add 1 tsp turmeric powder, 3/4 tsp salt and 1 tsp sugar and cook for a minute.

5. Then add 1 tsp jeera powder, 1 tsp coriander powder, 1 tsp garam masala powder and 1/2 tsp red chilli powder. Add 1/2 cup water and cook until oil separates or until the raw smell of the masala powders go away.

6. Grind 1/4 cup cooked black eyed peas into a paste.Add the ground paste and cook for 2 minutes.

7. Add the cooked balck eyed peas and cook for another 3-5 minutes. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve.

Black eyed peas masala is ready!!
