green peas are excellent sources of folic acid, ascorbic acid, B-Sitosterols; that help lower cholesterol.. Also green peas are rich in vitamin K.
So let me come to the main point! Today, one of the Makara Sankaranthi celebration day, what we TamBrahmins call Kanu’ day, I decided to make Green Peas Pulao, shifting away from the usual menu of this Kanu day - usually on this day,different kinds of rice is made; popular ones being the Coconut Rice, Lemon Rice, Tamarind Rice. Green Peas are abundantly found these days in the market and I was tempted to not only cook the Peas Pulao, but to make it look green too! So I used my creativity and tuned out this colourful green Peas Pulao to celebrate the glorious Pongal festivities.
The method is extremely easy to try out in any kitchen and am sure the recipe will be useful to youngsters too. So hop into SujanFunKitchen for the demonstration!

Ingredients:
Basmati rice - 1 cup
Green peas - ½ cup
Green chillies - 3
Ginger - 1 inch
Coriander leaves - 1 small bunch
Podina leaves - a handful
Ghee/Oil - 1 tbsp
Cumin seeds/jeera - 1 tsp
Bay leaf - 1
Cinnamon stick - 1
Salt to taste
Method:
Soak the rice after washing for one hour in 1 cup of water
Meanwhile grind together the green chillies, ginger, ooriander leaves and mint leaves into a paste adding few tsps of water
In a thick pan or cooker, heat ghee/oil
Roast bay leaf and cinnamon stick
Then add cumin seeds/jeera and allow to splutter
Now, add the green paste
Then, add the soaked water from the rice and allow to come to a boil adding salt
Now add the rice and allow to boil together
When the boil starts, simmer the flame to the lowest and close the pan or cooker
Time for 10 mins for the pan cooking and if cooker, pressure cook in usual way, over lowest flame for 10 minutes
Serve hot with raita of your choice
