Must You "Overeat" on Calories To Succeed On A Raw Diet?

Some raw foodists stuff themselves with more calories than their body would seem to require under traditional caloric models.

They use terms like "dietary thermogenesis" as ways of explaining how the extra calories are being used up and not stored at fat.

But is there any truth to these ideas? If not, what might be going on here.
