How to make Oyakodon (親子丼) Chicken and Egg Rice Bowl - a Cooking Japanese recipe

Oyakodon (親子丼) is a traditional Japanese comfort food with that great umami flavor made from chicken and eggs over rice. You will find Oyakodon all over Japan and in most Japanese restaurants around the world. Thanks to it’s simple recipe it has become a staple of Japanese home cooking.

The name Oyakodon literally means chicken and eggs over a bowl of rice. Oyako translates to “parent and child” referring to the chicken and egg. Don, short for donburi, refers to the type of deep bowl that is used for okyakodon. Or oyako donburi. Donburi also refers to these types of dishes that use a deep bowl of rice with other ingredients on top. Other examples include katsudon and gyudon.

Oyakodon combines tender chicken thighs with fresh eggs, and an umami rich, dashi based sauce poured over a bowl of fluffy white rice. It is easy to make and will surely be a hit in your home.
