Fried Modak | Ganesh Chaturthi Special | Sanjeev Kapoor Khazana

Modak stuffed with coconut jaggery mixture and deep fried.

FRIED MODAK

Ingredients

2 tbsps ghee
1 ½ cups scraped coconut
¾ cup chopped jaggery
1 tbsp poppy seeds
¼ tsp green cardamom powder
A pinch of salt
½ cup whole wheat flour
½ cup refined flour
Oil to deep fry

Method

1. Heat 1 tbsp ghee in a non-stick pan. Add scraped coconut, jaggery and cook till jaggery melts and the mixture is thick. Add poppy seeds,green cardamom powder, pinch of salt. Mix well. Transfer the mixture into a bowl and set aside to cool.
2. To make the dough mix whole wheat flour, refined flour, a pinch of salt and 1 tbsp ghee. Mix well. Add sufficient water and knead to stiff dough. Set aside for 10-15 minutes.
3. Divide the dough into equal portions. Flatten each portion with a rolling pin into thin roundels. Gently place a portion of the cooked mixture on centre of roundels and gather the edges and pinch to form shape like modak.
4. Heat sufficient oil in a kadai, add modaks and deep fry on medium heat till golden brown in colour. Drain on an absorbent paper.
5. Serve hot.
