Happy Laba Festival! If you have watched my last episode about Chinese bacon, then you will know that la Yue is the last lunar month of the year. And la ba is simply the 8th day of this month. Laba festival signifies the new year is just around the corner.

And today’s recipe is about two ceremonial and traditional Chinese dishes that people usually have on this date. First, we will make some laba congee, which is vegan, simple and tasty. A lot of Chinese temples have the custom of offering free laba congee on this date, to extend their blessings to the public for the coming year. So today let’s make some laba congee at home to celebrate this festival.

We will also make some laba garlic. They are sour and spicy, perfect condiments to dumplings and noodles.
