Ingredients for Basic Buttercream
50 grams unsalted butter
100grams confectioners' sugar/ icing sugar
¼ teaspoon vanilla essence
1 teaspoon Milk

How to make buttercream:
Put softened butter into a bowl. If the butter is in refrigerator, keep outside for half an hour before using. Soft butter will make it easier to mix.

Now take the hand beater and beat the butter. You can use hand whisk or a food processor with a whisk attachment.

Beat the butter till it’s reached much lighter colour (almost white), fluffy and has doubled in size. You will need to beat it for about three to four minutes.

Add small amount of icing sugar at a time with the butter and beat on medium speed until combined. Now add rest of the sugar and beat again till smooth.

When all sugar has been mixed in, icing will appear dry.

Now add milk and vanilla essence. We add milk to make frosting smooth and spreadable. If you are not certain with the amount of milk and little amount of milk just to check the consistency. If frosting is too thick, beat in more milk, a few drops at a time. If frosting becomes too thin, beat in a small amount of powdered sugar. Beat it for about two to three minutes till light and fluffy.

To make the colourful buttercream add few drops of gel icing colour. Lastly adding the colours allows you to get exactly the right shade for your cake or cupcakes.

Take a pipping bag and fill the butter cream into the bag.
Spread the butter cream on a cake or keep the buttercream in an airtight container and refrigerate it for 2 weeks.

Note:
You can add whipping cream instead of milk.
You can also substitute the vanilla extract with different flavours like:
o finely grated lemon zest
• finely grated orange zest
• few drops food colouring
• cocoa powder, to taste
.
If you would like to make your buttercream less sweet, then add a pinch of salt.
