Baked Red Bean Buns (烤豆沙包) | The Chinese Cuisine

These fluffy baked bao and filled with sweet red bean paste and make for an amazing breakfast, dessert, or snack.

INGREDIENTS (16 buns):
- 3 cups (~360g) all-purpose flour
- 1.75 cups (~414 ml) buttermilk
- 320g (~1 cup) red bean paste
- 1 tbsp. ghee
- 1 tsp. sugar
- 1 tsp. yeast
- 1 egg (for egg wash)

DIRECTIONS:
1. Combine flour, sugar, and yeast and mix evenly
2. Pour in warmed buttermilk and begin to mix together
3. Mix in ghee
4. Mix and knead into dough
5. Cover and let rise for 1 hour
6. Knead once at the halfway mark
7. After 1 hour, knead dough on a floured surface
8. Divide dough into 16 pieces
9. Knead each individual piece and flatten into circular wrapper
10. Place a piece of red bean paste into the middle of each wrapper and wrap into bao shape as shown
11. brush on egg wash
12. cover and let rest for about 30 minutes
13. bake at 350 °F for 30 minutes
14. serve and enjoy!

buns can be stored at room temperature for several days in sealed container
