1939 Depression Era Health Biscuits Recipe | Glen And Friends Cooking

This 1939 Health Biscuits Recipe - isn't 'healthy' in the way we might think of healthy today. It's more of an energy cookie; packed with sugar and fat it'll get you over that mid afternoon hump when you're out in the field bailing hay. Or before you head to the barn for the 4:30am milking. Probably not great for snacking on the couch; but they sure are tasty and that's we did.
Ingredients:
1 egg
½ cup butter
½ cup shortening
1 cup brown sugar
1 tsp soda
¾ cup chopped dates
¾ cup chopped walnuts
¾ cup raisins
2 cups rolled oats
2 cups whole wheat flour
¼ tsp salt
(enough sour milk to hold together)

Method:
Mix ingredients with enough sour milk to hold together and drop on buttered pan.

***The recipe is written above in the way I found it in the recipe book.
- I used kefir, but buttermilk is what they mean in the recipe by sour milk. I didn't measure, but it felt like ¾ - 1 cup
of kefir.
- I baked them in 350ºF oven for 10-12 minutes
