1906 Fernet Cocktail Recipe - Cocktails after Dark - Glen And Friends Cooking
This is a fairly simple classic cocktail recipe that uses Fernet-Branca, Curaçao, and Italian Vermouth (red or sweet vermouth). It's found in the 1906 cocktail recipe book by Louis Muckensturm called; Louis’ Mixed Drinks. Louis authored a number of books in addition to 'Louis’ Mixed Drinks', others included: Louis’ Every Woman’s Cookbook, and Louis’ Salads and Chafing Dishes. Louis was also one of America’s top restaurateurs in the early twentieth century, after emigrating from Alsace in the 1890s. He employed his training from the family hotel business to open a restaurant; Louis’ Café in Boston.

Louis’ Café was a French restaurant, but the Muckensturms were from Alsace, which was German at that time. Louis spoke French, German (the language of his homeland) and English - and apparently liked to pronounce his name with the English flair of 'Lewis'.

Fernet Cocktail Ingredients:
Take two dashes of Curaçao,
One Liqueur-glass of Fernet Branca, and
Two liqueur-glasses of Italian Vermouth.
Fill the mixing-glass with ice; stir well and strain into a cocktail-glass.
