1862 Whiskey Cocktail Vs. 1876 Improved Whiskey Cocktail. Today we are looking a two whiskey cocktails by Jerry Thomas from his 1862 & 1876 cocktail / bartender guides. It is believed that these two whiskey cocktail recipes morphed over time into the Old Fashioned (whiskey) Cocktail, and the Manhattan... some even think that the Sazerac Cocktail was inspired by or evolved from these as well. But everything is debate-able and why bother, just have a cocktail and relax.

1862 Whisk(e)y Cocktail
1 bar spoon gum syrup
2 dashes bitters (Boker’s is spec)
2 ounces Whiskey
1 piece lemon peel

Shake with Cracked Ice and strain into glass.

1876 Improved Whiskey Cocktail
2 dashes Boker’s (or Angostura) bitters
3 dashes gum syrup
2 dashes maraschino
1 dash absinthe
1 piece lemon peel
2 ounces whiskey

Shake with shaved ice and strain into a glass
