You won't believe how easy it is to translate Foreign subtitles to YouTube Videos for FREE!

This video will answer the question "How do I add foreign language subtitles to youtube videos?" (including "how to add English subtitles") with a step by step tutorial. If you've ever wondered how to reach a global audience, adding subtitles can encourage viewers who don't speak your language to watch your video for longer by allowing them to see what's being spoken in their own language.

Note that this particular tutorial for how to add other languages to youtube videos is for videos where you have voice. The steps in this tutorial are not for videos without voice, and also it will not translate a text box that you have added to your video during your editing before uploading to youtube.

In order for this to work to add closed captioning to youtube video, when you first upload your video in youtube studio, you have to have a language for the video chosen on the first page of the upload screen. Go to show more then scroll down to the language selection and select your language, then hit "next". On the 2nd screen youll see an option to add captions, but as far as I can tell this is only for the language of the video. And theres an easier way, so Im going to skip this for now. Then you can publish your video, or set it to publish at a certain date and time. Either way the next steps are the same, however there is a benefit to setting it for a future date and time. Even if you make your future date and time 30 minutes after you add subtitles, this will allow your video to have the subtitles available for the very first view.

For the next step, you can either go to subtitles on the left hand side of youtube studio or select the video you want under content. Im going to do it from the content submenu. The steps will be the same whether this is an old video or it something you scheduled to publish in the future. Now Im going to scroll down to a video I know I need to add subtitles to. Then I hit the details pencil icon. This brings me to the screen for that video. Now look on the left side of the screen and click on subtitles.
Now youll see the language you published the video in. Next go to the upper right and click on duplicate and edit. Itll ask you if you want to overwrite track, hit confirm. This will bring up a screen with the youtube transcription. Next hit the link that says edit timings. Youtube will automatically fill in the timings with its speech to text feature. Because it doesnt always transcribe accurately, if you have time you should check it over. When all looks good go back up to the top right and hit publish.

Now were ready to add our additional languages. Hit the Add language button and select the language you want from the list. Next go to add under the subtitles column. The easiest option if youre not worried about total accuracy is "auto translate". If you knew the language you translated into, you could then further edit this manually. Last, just go back up to the top and hit publish and youre done. Keep adding languages if you like, repeating the process.

How to Turn on YouTube Subtitles:
To turn on subtitles from a computer, go to the settings/gear icon, go to subtitles/CC and then pick the language you want from the list. For mobile, hit the three dots in the upper right, then select captions, then choose from the list of available languages.

How to see if YouTube viewers are using subtitles / closed captioning:
Go to your YouTube studio analytics page and then click on audience. Scroll down past the countries section and youll see top subtitle/CC languages. From here you can see the number of views by subtitled language. And you can see the same information in the stats for any single video.

How to get viewers to turn on subtitles / closed captioning:
Because not many creators use subtitles, viewers will often not bother to turn them on. Or they just dont know about it. So if you dont remind people at the beginning to turn on closed captioning then you risk them not knowing you even did all that hard work to add them and maybe they leave your video a lot sooner than they would have if they knew about the subtitles. So I recommend adding a message at the beginning of your video reminding folks to turn them on.
