Pickle is still a very essential part of Indian food. There are many stories behind the pickle making how and why they prepare them. Pickle is one of the ancient food preservation technique. Four thousands of years, our ancestors have explored ways to pickle foods and happy to say that methods of pickling are originated from India. Pickling requires the right ingredients, right attitude and patience. 

When it comes to Pickle we only think about the lime, mango and chilly Pickle. But there are many other fruits also used for Pickle by our ancestors. So today I am talking about one wild fruit which is often lost in the wild without proper information that is Kembal kai(ಕೆಂಬಲ್ ಕಾಯಿ, ಕಾಡು ದ್ರಾಕ್ಷಿ) or commonly called as jungle angoor, jungle grapevine. This wild fruit pickle can store until 7 to 8 years. 

I found this authentic wild fruit during lockdown days. We were wandering in forest at my native place this fruit beautifully hanging in the vine at dense forest. Anyhow, we managed to pluck all the fruits brought home and prepared delicious Pickle. Only tender fruits are used in the pickle preparation.

So here is a little about this wild fruit. It looks like a black grape grows in clusters. Botanically called as Ampelocissus latifolia in the  Vitoideae subfamily of the vine family (Vitaceae). It is an endemic plant of the Indian subsequent. This fruit commonly found in the forest of Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Kerala. It only found during the beginning of the rainy season i.e May, June, July. It is a creeping plant with smooth stalks, leaves are heart-shaped, fruits seen in clusters. There are 10 to 15 clusters in one vine. Usually, one cluster consists of 100 - 150 fruits. It is brownish in raw it turns black when it ripe. There are 2 to 3 seeds inside the fruit are also used in ayurvedic medicine preparation. Juices of this raw fruit can cause itchiness to your skin.

This wild fruit pickle is still very popular in the market and can be grown commercially. This Pickle has much health benefits its very good to cough expectorant. Unfortunately, this nutrient-rich wild fruit is often lost in the wild without the proper information. As I am very fond of traditional recipes I want to preserve this authentic pickling fruit recipes to the future generation.
