Thai Recipe - Som Tam (Papaya Salad) at Night Market in Thailand | JoysThaiFood

Making Som Tam at a night market close to where we live in southern Thailand. This is a Thai woman mixing up the ingredients for som tam at outdoor night market in Surat Thani, Thailand. Som tum is the favorite food of the entire nation of Thailand!

I think most Thai people eat som tam at least once per week, but most of us like to have it at least 3-5 times per week. Some people cannot go an entire day without eating som tam!

Som tam has many different ingredients depending on the style of som tam. Usually - unripe shaved papaya, carrot shavings, tomatoes, palm sugar, fish oil, bla-rah (fermented crap or fish paste), green beans, tiny shrimp, and garlic. I don't think I forgot anything.

Sometimes Thais make som tam at home, but usually we just go to our local market or som tam street vendor and buy it there because we have a certain taste we like and if we know we can get it down the street for just 30 Thai Baht, it is easier to do that than making som tam on our own!
