Lauki Chana Dal | Family Food Tales with Mrs Alyona Kapoor | Sanjeev Kapoor Khazana

LAUKI CHANA DAL

Ingredients

1 medium bottle gourd (lauki), peeled and cut into cubes
1 cup split skinless Bengal gram (chana dal), soaked for 2-3 hours
2 teaspoons ghee
1 teaspoon cumin seeds (jeera)
A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
1-2 green chillies, slit
¼ teaspoon turmeric powder
1 inch ginger, finely chopped
½ teaspoon cumin (jeera) powder
½ teaspoon coriander powder
1 teaspoon red chilli powder
Salt to taste
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon chopped fresh coriander leaves
Fresh coriander sprigs for garnishing

Method

1. Heat ghee in a pressure cooker. Add cumin seeds, and once they begin to change colour, add asafoetida, chillies, turmeric powder, ginger and sauté for a few seconds.
2. Add Bengal gram, mix well and sauté for 1-2 minutes.
3. Add cumin powder, coriander powder and chilli powder and mix well. Add bottle gourd and mix well. Add water as required and mix well.
4. Add salt, mix, cover and pressure cook till the pressure is released 2 times. Remove from heat, add lemon juice, coriander leaves and mix well.
5. Garnish with coriander sprigs and serve hot with steamed rice.
