This dish made of raw Bananas or Yam is one of the many dishes that make up the Onam Sadya. Here is how you can make it at home.Ingredients: 2 raw Kerala Bananas1 cup Yoghurt (Dahi)1 cup grated Coconut1 tsp Peppercorns2 Green Chillies1/2 tsp Red Chilli powder1/2 tsp Turmeric powder1/2 tsp Cumin seeds1/4 tsp Mustard seeds1/4 tsp Fenugreek seeds3 dry red Chillies3 tbsp Coconut OilCurry leavesSalt to tasteMethod: In a pan or earthen pot put in the peeled Bananas along with Turmeric powder, few Curry leaves, Salt and enough water to cook the Bananas. Once the Bananas are cooked there should be no excess water. In a blender grind the grated Coconut, Peppercorns, Cumin seeds and Green Chillies with a little water to make a smooth paste. Add this ground Coconut paste to the cooked Bananas and stir well. Cook for a few minutes. if needed add Salt. Finally, add the whisked Yoghurt and simmer for 2 minutes. Take care not to boil the Kaalan.In another pan, heat Oil and add the Mustard seeds, broken Red Chillies. Fenugreek seeds and a few Curry leaves. Pour this seasoning over the Kaalan and serve hot.
