Koeksisters Recipe - African Snack

In this video we are going to make a sweet and delicious south African treat called koeksisters. They can be served cold for dessert or enjoyed as snack.
Koeksisters are a traditional South African treat. And here a simple recipe on how to make them.
Ingredients
500g of sugar
Juice of one lime
1 tbsp of ginger (fresh or ground) of ginger
One cinnamon sticks
Two cups of water
2 cups of flour
1 egg
2 tablespoons of butter
150 ml of milk
Vegetable oil for deep frying
1 teaspoon of salt
2 tablespoon of baking powder
And water as needed
Direction:
Start by making the syrup, you can make the syrup one day before the cooking time.
Bring the water to boil then add the sugar and stir until it totally dissolves. Add the lime juice, the cinnamon sticks and the ginger. Stir well, then reduce the on low and cook for 15 to 20 min.
Then transfer in a bowl and keep in the refrigerator for at least 8h .
The next step is to make the dough
Transfer the flour in a larger bowl , add the baking powder and the salt.
Then rub the butter in the flour, mix the butter very well with flour before you add in the egg.
Add the milk in the flour mixture and try to form dough. You might need to add a little bit of water if the dough is too dry or more flour if it is too sticky. Knead the dough for few minutes.
Next, put the dough in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. This step will make the dough easy to work with.
After 30 minutes, knead the dough a little more and divide it into small size.
Use your rolling pin to flatten the dough.
Cut the dough into strips and divide each into 3 don't cut all the way trough .
Plait each one all the way to the end.
Heat the vegetable oil and deep fry until golden brown.
Next, Remove and drain the koeksisters -- dip them in the cold syrup
When the koeksisters absorb enough of the syrup remove .
You can serve them immediately or very cold.
