Dietitians Top Snack Bar Picks

The fall gets a lot busier, so you may find yourself grabbing a quick snack like one of these bars! Save this post for my top bar picks and share it with one one who would like this too!

Note that Im not recommending you eat these kinds of bars ALL the time - whole/minimally processed foods should always come first. However lets be realistic - life is busy and you may need to grab a snack bar! This video is here for you to make an informed choice. Also note that its hard to find a perfect bar - just because a bar doesnt check all the boxes doesnt mean its not a good choice. You have to evaluate what is most important to you.

What to look for in snack bars:
1. A small ingredient list - I like to aim for 10 ingredients or under. fewer ingredients a protein bar has, the better. The length of the ingredients list usually indicates the level of processing.
2. Look for whole foods. While some bars are made of nothing but ultra-processed ingredients, others are made from just a few whole food ingredients.
3. Look for sugar alcohols. Low sugar isnt always a good thing. To get a sweet tasting bar without using sugar, many bar manufacturers use sugar alcohols. Sugar alcohols may result in gastrointestinal side effects.
4. Minimal added sugars. Id prefer the bar be sweetened with more whole food sources such as dates or other dried fruits - this adds fibre and other vitamins and minerals vs a processed sugar, which just is basically sugar with minimal nutritional value.
5. Protein aim for 10 g or more per serving.
6. Fibre aim for 4 grams or more per serving.

2. Kind Plus Bars: The ingredient list is fairly short, a good amount of protein and fibre. A bit of added sugar but not astronomical.
3. YoFiit Bars: good fibre and protein + low sugar. Love the ingredients too! Just wish a different kind of fat was used to decrease saturated fat.

5. RXBars: Love the simple & whole food list + a good amount of protein and fibre. I dont eat egg whites but love the RxBar Plant!
