Black gram chutney | Simple chutney for dosa without coconut | Karupu ulundu chutney | Madras Curry Channel

This is a very simple chutney for dosa without coconut. Black gram / Karuppu ulundu is used in abundance to give thickness to the chutney and fresh coriander along with onion adds a delicate flavour to this chutney, one of the best side dish for dosa/idli.

Serves: 3 to 4
Shelf-life: 1 day (2 to 3 days when refrigerated)

INGREDIENTS:
1. Black gram with skin on - 2 tbsp
2. Indian mundu chillies or regular dry red chillies - 2 to 3
3. Onion, large - 1
4. Asafoetida - 1/4 tsp
5. Tamarind - 1 gooseberry size
6. Coriander leaves - 1 handful
7. Oil (Sesame oil is preferred) - 2 tbsp

To temper:
8. Oil - 2 tsp
9. Mustard seeds - 1/4 tsp
10. Dry red chillies - 2
11. Split black gram - 1/2 tsp
