Lumpini Park is a large park in the centre of Bangkok Thailand. There are dozens of big Asian water monitor lizards (Varanus salvator) walking around in the park. They are the world's second heaviest lizard, after the Komodo dragon and often reach 1.5 to 2 meters in length. They have a couple of names in Thai, one, hia (), is used as an insult, but they are also commonly known as dtua gin gai () chicken eater. These large reptiles are quite common throughout Thailand and also in other parts of Asia. Last time I was in Lumpini Park a monster water monitor that had been swimming around in a pond caught an eel and I managed to get some of it on film.
