A Trip to Amritsar 2019 | Chef Ananya Banerjee

This lockdown has been hard on many of us. So, to cheer us up and revisit some of our amazing trips down the memory lane, i am sharing a very personal fun trip to Amritsar with my friends. Amritsar is a city which literally mean ‘pool of nectar’ and is the largest city of Punjab. It is a destination that captures the idea of eat, pray, love and many more, something every traveller look for. Not only does it has a history of its own but is also considered to be a sacred and religious place. Amritsar is also famed for its textiles, particularly shawls, and its carpets.

Got the opportunity to visit the beautiful city of Amritsar with a group of friends and after reaching, the first place I visited was famous ‘Kanha sweets’ shop for lunch, a must-visit for every foodies travelling to Amritsar. I loved their chhole puri which was delicious and worth every bit of it. After a short rest at Ramada Hotel, the place we were staying and we explore the town and went shopping for some of stuff Amritsar is famous for like juti (Indian footwear). The place is also a great destination for foodies who would love to enjoy some regional dishes and unique foods. Amritsar has the best dishes and delicious home style cooked foods. I tried sarso ka saag, makki di roti and maa ki daal and loved it. Also, took care of our sweet cravings at the ‘Gurudasram Jalebiwala’ which gives you the experience of a perfect jalebis.

The second day of our trip was all about knowing the city more. We went to ‘Jallianwala Bagh’ for some serenity and got the chance to know more about its history up close. How can we missed darshan to ‘Golden temple’!!! I was amazed and in awe to see the preparations of the langar for the 1,40,000 visitors daily. Being a chef i understand the amount of effort and work that goes into preparing nourishing and tasty dishes for so many people everyday. I was really humbled to be able to be part of the ‘seva’ and i suggest everyone visiting Amritsar to definitely try experiencing it. Our day ended with a very fulfilling dinner of butter chicken, keema nan, tandoori roti and Amritsari fish at Crystal Restaurant. We made another visit the next day to ‘Golden temple’ and got to try ‘kadah prasad’. The sight of gold plated exterior of the temple is just breathtaking and one should try to witness it at least once while at Amritsar. The foodie in me would not let finish the trip without another visit to enjoy the lip-smacking jalebi, so I took a trip to the jalebiwali again and took along some sweet memories with me back home.
