$100 Ghim Moh Hawker Food Challenge! Ghim Moh Food Centre with a Fan! Singapore Street Food

In this episode, we are back for another Hawker episode where we destroyed $100 worth of Hawker Food at Ghim Moh Market & Food Centre! Ghim Moh Food Centre, located near Buona Vista MRT station, is a mainstay for Singaporeans living in the Southwest. It boasts over 60 food stalls and even has a Michelin Bib Gourmand recipient! Always on the hunt for good hawkers to try and help out, I decided to use this place for a challenge. To pair with this greasy and heavy meal, I had with me Nutriwell's Roselle Tea which is known to help with digestion and has a sour flavour I thought would aid in flavour fatigue. We will be having a giveaway, details below.

Joining me was Yeow Wei, a longtime fan and a true lover of food, who personally recommended this hawker centre for its excellent food. His food knowledge and passion was apparent as he effortlessly guided me through the numerous food stalls, almost tourguide-like in explaining the nuances and workings of this hawker centre. He even knew when each stall runs of food, the ebb and flow of the queues and the history of the individual owners. Without his help, managing this shoot would have been a nightmare.

After much queuing and ordering, we finally amassed over $100 worth of scrumptious hawker fare. In hawker pricing terms, $100 is an immense amount of food. With such a massive portion and less than half of the food fitting on screen, we had to do the challenge in parts. We got over 10 items, most in large sizes and some in 2 portions.

The standout dish would be the Roast Pork, which was somewhat of a hidden gem as it was wholly unexpected to be blow me away. It was decadently fatty and meaty, with a generous portion size and crispy skin. The Black Carrot Cake and Hokkien Mee came close seconds, with the former having just the right amount of sweetness to balance the salty radish base and spice from the chilli and the latter having decent wok hei and heavy doses of all the delicious toppings and lard. The Beef Hor Fun was also notable - although I ate it last and was deep in flavour fatigue, I still enjoyed it.

Thanks to Yeow Wei, we managed to complete this challenge comfortably. His recommendation hit the mark perfectly as the food was genuinely good to excellent across the mark. Hawkers are known to fluctuate in quality and there is rarely more than one or two stalls worth visiting at a given hawker centre, but this one of the few that bucks this trend. Most of the food is sold out by 1pm at the best stalls and queues can get massive close to lunch hour, so be warned. This was also why we were unable to get the coveted Michelin Bib Gourmand Char Kway Teow located here. Head down to Ghim Moh Market & Food Centre for a varied and mouthwatering hawker feast!
